I have spoken to so many students who are confused about how to research, how to begin writing an essay, how to prepare for exam essays, how to structure an essay, or even larger issues such as how to structure their time at university or how to manage the stress of the system.
I can provide you with advice and support on any of the following, and probably more.
- how to structure your time at university
- how to research — either a dissertation, or an essay
- how to develop your writing skills
- how to improve writing structure
- how to engage critically with your own work
- how to improve exam essay writing skills
- how to manage your workload at university
- discussing and developing ideas for assignments/essays/dissertations
A one hour session can involve discussing any of the above, or more than one. Perhaps you know exactly what you want to work on, or perhaps you don’t really know what the problem is, you just know you’re struggling. You can bring along (or send me) any materials you’d like us to discuss, such as essay questions, past work, first draft of a new essay etc. The only limitation is how much we can achieve in an hour. I’m a fast reader, but I’d suggest keeping the essays short, or deciding on one part you’d like to focus on.
Sometimes all an academic idea or difficulty needs is a bit of bashing about. Writing can be improved with a few helpful pointers, ideas can be developed and finessed through discussion and critical engagement. Scheduling problems and difficulties with structuring academic work can be sorted by sitting down with someone and coming up with a logical plan for how to address the problems that are emerging, or avoid the problems in the first place.
I can provide tutoring as a follow-on from this, and I also provide proofreading and editing services for essay and dissertation drafts, but I also recognise that not all students have the money for regular support. This service is therefore designed to address your issues in a single one-hour session, to put you on the road to feeling more confident and informed about how to approach your studies.
So how do we begin?
If you’d like to arrange a meeting with me, just send me an email telling me what you’d like to focus on and we can arrange a slot from there. All meetings are conducted remotely; we can chat on the phone or Zoom. Meetings can generally be arranged for any time in the week, with some availability for early evening meetings.
If you have any questions, just send me an email and I’ll get back to you with further contact details and information as quickly as possible. Tell me exactly what you’re looking for and we can arrange a time to chat or to begin working together.
