Beta Reading

What is beta reading?

In essence, beta reading simply refers to getting a second person to read over your work, but it is also implied that this will lead to a certain amount of feedback.

As any writer knows, while friends and family may be enthusiastic about you writing a book, when asked to read it and provide their feedback, they get a little cagey, or busy. Also, are these really the people you want reading your work? Skillset aside, it’s not always best to get pragmatic feedback from the people you love the most.

So this is where a professional beta reader comes in. We also happen to have a wealth of knowledge, qualifications and industry experience that makes our feedback rather more helpful.

What should I expect from beta reading?

You will be asked to simply send your manuscript to me and, some time later, depending on the length of the text, I will get back to you with a number of pages of written feedback. You will then also be asked if you’d like to arrange a time to chat, on the phone or over Zoom.

I would suggest sending a document that is as close to being complete as possible, but I am happy to look at work that is at any stage. Indeed, very often people go for this service when they feel stuck and in need of new eyes. While I will provide a general overview, I am also happy for you to direct me towards a certain aspect that you’d like me to focus on, such as how to progress the argument/narrative.

I charge £75 per 10,000 words, and for every 10,000 words, you get a 10-minute consultation and a page of notes. This means that if you send me 60,000 words, for example, the cost will be £450 and you will get six pages of notes and a 1-hour chat.

Note that if you are looking for line editing, notes and feedback on the actual text or consultation on the process of developing the text, you may be better off with my proofreading or writing coaching services. Beta reading provides notes on the overall writing style, argument/narrative and potential of the work, rather than detailed notes and feedback.

How long will it take?

I can read about 30,000 words per week, although I may not always be available to start immediately, so ideally enquire and book in advance.

Before you begin, I am also happy to have a quick chat about what you’re looking for. This chat is completely free. There is no need to commit any money or commit to working with me. Just arrange a time with me and we can chat about what you need.
